Week of December 12th

 Happy Friday!

It has been a Christmas filled week in Kindergarten! This week we had a great time learning about how the weather changes in different months and seasons. Our read alouds this week were Every Season, Jump Into January, Elf Pets: An Arctic Fox Tradition, and Twas The Night Before Christmas

In ELA this week we focused on how the weather changes in different months and seasons! We spoke about Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall and the months! We drew pictures in our workbooks of us doing an activity in the winter or summer and compared pictures with the class. We continued working through our phonics program reviewing the sounds & letters of b, t, f, m, n, i, u, o, c, a, g, d, s, e, r, p & j. We introduced three new consonants 'h', 'l', and 'k'. Our letter of the week was 'Ii'! We met our next letter person Mr. I with Impossible Inches and completed our puppet! In grammar we learned that each sentence must have a "naming part" and a "action part", and that the naming part is called the subject. We underlined the subjects in sentences as worked as a class to write a complete sentence. We continued working through Chapter 4 in Math. We focused on the words first, second, third, fourth, and fifth. We also identified and wrote 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10! In Social Studies we continued our holiday travels to Germany, Greenland, and Israel! We lit the third candle on our Advent wreath and spoke about joy! They sang Spanish Christmas songs in Spanish, used movement scarfs in Music, and played a Christmas themed game of tag in Gym! They also completed their Christmas bears in Art.

Center time as a hit this week! In the Word Work Center I worked with the students doing word families! We identified & matched pictures that ended in -og and -ot! In the Art Center the students made a special surprise with Mrs. Lowe :). In the math center the student did various hands on Christmas mats that included a Roll & Cover, Build it Up!, Count & Find, Number Tracing, and Count & Write! In the discovery center the students used green playdoh and popsicle sticks to create Christmas trees. Students read a book, played on the iPad, or did a puzzle in the free center!

Winter was very active this week! He was found star gazing, roasting marshmallows with furry friends, and even messing with Ms. E! Winter did have to give our class a little "warning" form because of some chit-chat, but we were up to the task and Winter gained his magic back the next day! :)

Next Week:
  • Monday: Lunch with Santa! The children will be served pizza, a drink, and a special allergy free, cold treat for dessert. The children will also take a picture with Santa! The cost is $6.00. If your child does not eat pizza, please send in lunch.
  • Wednesday: Our class Christmas celebration & Book Exchange! For the book exchange, please send in a wrapped gender-neutral book by Tuesday. Thank you so much for everything!
  • Last call for donations to Rosemont Care Facility by Monday! The donation due date was pushed back and we will still be accepting donations on Monday! Thanks!

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!
    Best,
        Miss Ryan & Mrs. Lowe

Week of December 5th

 Happy Friday!

We had a wonderful and joyous week here in K! The children did amazing at their Christmas Concert and they were very excited for all of you to watch them sing :) Our read alouds this week were Santa's Lost Reindeer and Turkey Claus!

In ELA this week we took our Unit 2 test and introduced Unit 3! Again, the students did such a great job listening, looking at their own paper, and staying quiet! We continued working through our phonics program reviewing the sounds & letters of b, t, f, m, n, i, u, o, c, a, g, d, s, e & r. We introduced two more consonants 'p' and 'j'. We continued working our way through & reviewing B! This was a busy week so many B puppets did not get finished, so I am sending them home with the popsicle sticks we use. These do not need to be finished and returned to school! We continued working through Chapter 4 in Math. This week we focused on the words fewest, most, and equalizing sets. We also identified and wrote 0, 1, 2, & 3! In Social Studies we grabbed our suitcases and travelled off to Italy and Mexico to see how they celebrate Christmas! We lit the second candle on our Advent wreath and spoke about peace! In Religion this week we also had our safe environment lesson and had a very important talk about safe touches, bad touches, and what to do if a stranger approaches us. The children took this talk very seriously and did great! In Art they painted clay candy canes!

Christmas in centers continued this week! In the Word Work Center the students read Christmas books and played sight word bingo. In the Art center the students created the baby Jesus and wrote the sentence "Oh Come Let Us Adore Him"! In the math center the students counted Christmas items and practiced writing numbers. In the discovery center we created "Snowman in a bag" which ended up turning out more like a melted snowman! Students read a book, played with Playdoh, or on the iPad in the free center!

Our elf Winter is a huge star in our room! This week Winter was found taking a bubble bath in our kitchen sink and sleeping in his pj's because he thought it was the weekend already! A few kindness tasks Winter gave us this week were: "Ask a friend to play", "Give a compliment", and "Speak kindly".

Next Week:
  • Tuesday: Class visit to Secret Santa Shop & Report Cards sent home!
  • Friday: Dress Down Day
We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Best,
Miss Ryan & Mrs. Lowe

Happy December!

 It's Fri-YAY in K!

It was a wonderful week here in Kindergarten getting into the Christmas spirit! This week we had a great time learning about what we can create using shapes. Our read alouds this week were David's Drawings, Mouse Shapes, Dr. Suess' ABC, The Elf on the Shelf, Tough Cookie, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and Say Zoop! (our star student Juliet's favorite book!).

In ELA this week we focused on what we can create with shapes! We spoke about all the different ways we use shapes when we are drawing or building to create things! We continued working through our phonics program reviewing the sounds & letters of b, t, f, m, n, i, u, o, c, a, g, d & s. We introduced our final vowel 'e' and the letter 'r'. Our letter of the week was 'Bb'! We met our next letter person Mr. B with Beautiful Buttons! The Mr. B puppet is another puppet that takes some time and patient work - so they will be coming home next week! We began Chapter 4 in Math focusing on numbers 0-10. This week we focused on the words: as many as, more, and fewer. In Social Studies we began our trip around the world seeing how other countries celebrate Christmas! We made our luggage and began our trip in France! In Religion we learned about Advent. As a class we blessed our wreath and gathered around as we lit the first candle. The students also began their own Advent wreaths as well. Each Monday the students will "light" another candle on their wreath! In gym the students practiced throwing. In Art they read The Sweet Smell of Christmas and began painting a teddy bear project. They chose new books in Library, practiced for the Christmas Concert in Music, and counted in Spanish!

It's Christmas time in our centers! In the Word Work Center I worked 1-on-1 with the students assessing and practicing for our 1st Trimester Report Cards. In the art center Mrs. Lowe helped the students create tissue paper wreaths! In the discovery center the students used our blocks to build Jesus a manger. In the math center the students counted Christmas cookies and compared amounts! Students read a book, played with Playdoh, or on the iPad in the free center!

Our elf arrived this week! On Monday we wrote letters to Santa asking for an elf on the shelf. The students loved coming up with the letter (and I loved how we were practicing sentence building & writing!). As a class we voted on names and the name Winter won! On Wednesday a small door appeared in our room and everyone wondered what might be behind it! On Thursday, Winter arrived! He moved around the seats and wrote the students a note. On Friday, Winter introduced himself as a 'Kindness Elf'. Each day, when Winter moves, he will give our class a kindness task. Today's task was to "Share with a friend!".

Next Week:
  • Monday: 2nd Trimester Begins
  • Tuesday: K-4 Christmas Concert @ 7 PM! The students sound amazing, we are so proud!
  • Wednesday: Mothers of Young Children group is coming to our Kindergartens to sing Christmas carols! The mothers would like to bring a snack for the children so a morning snack is not needed. The snacks will be allergy safe & store bought.
  • Thursday: Immaculate Conception - No School
  • Friday: Monthly School Mass at 9 AM! All are welcome to join us!
We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Best,
Miss Ryan & Mrs. Lowe
